An Unimportant Nobody
“Hi..”
“Who is this?” lit up the screen
Like lightning during a storm.
I could have, no, should have—
I now know I needed to say—
“Don’t you remember? The girl you cared about.”
Or
“Somebody looking for a kept promise”
Or
“An old, young friend.”
But I didn’t dare discover bravery,
Tell you what I thought.
No, that would require
One of us caring
Like a friend should,
Which would simply be wrong
Because saying we’re friends is like
Saying the sky is orange:
A blatant prevarication.
So I said “Lacee…”
An unimportant nobody.
