Family
hate to say this
hate to give away, to shine light upon
the glinting shards of our family,
but I don’t know you
I’ve stood where you stand
wished someone would take my hand
chatted, laughed, teased, attacked
been attacked, and saved
but I don’t know you
if blood is thicker than water
why do I remember the icy water
I plunged into after the fight
more than your face?
I want so much to fix this
to have the perfect words
but the truth is,
I don’t know what to say.
I could try “I get it”
but that’s too generic. everyone says that.
I say that to everyone.
you’re not everyone, or anyone,
you’re family.
and don’t you get something for that
for the luck of the crappy draw?
I don’t know,
but I hope so.
