Milestone
Heart in her throat
She answered his question
Grinned a little and
Reciprocated
He obligingly answered back
And their legs unconsciously
Moved and she was walking with
A Boy, as easy as that.
Of course it meant nothing
Really
But it was a milestone
And she was sure her dad would ask
Who the young man was
And she would tell him
Truthfully and carelessly - that was key.
So saying goodbye as nonchalantly as possible,
She stepped off the sidewalk
To find her father reading
And oblivious to this new development.
So she pretended that she hadn't just
Grown up a little bit.
