Lamentations 5
Remember what has happened to us
We have been disgraced
Our homes turned over to strangers
Our inheritance to foreigners
We are widowed
Our mothers are orphaned
Water to drink is expensive
We have to pay to get enough food to survive
We are exhausted
Our ancestors have died
We are suffering punishment they deserved
There is no one left to rescue us
Slaves rule
Violence has become our master
Famine has blackened our skin
As though baked in an oven
Enemies rape the young girls
Princes are being hanged by their thumbs
Our elders are treated with contempt
Young men work at millstones
Boys stagger under heavy loads
We no longer dance and sing
Joy has left our hearts
Dancing has turned to mourning
Weep for us
We have sinned
Our heads are sick and weary
And our eyes grow dim with tears
Our hearts are empty and desolate
Haunted by jackals
You continue to forget us
You abandoned us for so long
You utterly rejected us
You are angry with us still
Bring us back to you again
Give us back the joys we once had!
