the silence stretches thick
between us & suddenly the
words i am about to write
slip mid-formation & shift into typewriter backspace

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

& my head is empty

i count the seconds
like the days between the words
you said
& the words you

didn’t say

the start\stop of my breathing against the
push\pull of your gaze makes a rhythm that
drops onto the top of
my page & lays there

dormant

curling like smoke
your gaze lingers and there are letters
syllables & rainclouds on the tip of my tongue but i

don’t think you could ever understand how much we needed to just

talk

& so i don’t say a thing
& the raindrops slide down
my throat

they are cold like you
you are cold like rain

& somehow i still like
the

rain
