A Love Story in 13 Parts
1. The first time I saw you, you were covered in speckles of yellow paint, up to your elbows in sunflowers.
2. They looked me in the eye as if to say, “Look at us, we’re climbing to reach your sky."
3. So did you.
4. You’ve got brown eyes, and golden hair.
5. I walked home with my heart in my hands the day they told me that you had left.
6. They say maybe you’ll be back next August.
7. But you were a wildflower, and I doubt you’re that predictable.
8. You were the only one I knew who could hold the sunlight in their open palms.
9. You had a lion’s smile.
10. You were always in a state somewhere in between singing and crying.
11. I go to the field everyday, hoping you’ll be back, that I’ll run to meet you, so much taller than me
12. that you would laugh, and say you missed me.
13. And I know sunflowers can’t talk, but sometimes I hear you laughing.
