Here's the Truth
The truth is I don’t think I’ll ever forget your smile,
the tips of your fingers or the curls in your hair.
I won’t remember that exact conversation or
the date of your first kiss, but I’ll never forget
how you said good morning, good night, and
my favorite hello.
The truth is I didn’t fall for the brown of your
eyes or the bell of your laughter.
I loved the smell of your hugs and the way you
strummed your fingernails against your guitar
like you were playing away the misery.
The truth is I won’t miss the cement we walked on,
the sky after a firework or the air in the morning.
I’ll find those things in my current life, back to home.
What I’ll miss about you is the stubble of your cheek,
and the look in your eyes when you told me
you
loved
me.
The truth is I won’t forget you, and I won’t
fall for anyone the way I did for you: too fast,
but yet so painfully slow. I won’t ever not miss
the sound of your voice or the print of your thumb.
Here’s to telling the truth and never forgetting,
here’s to the one who loved and the me who lost,
here’s to my favorite hello,
and my hardest goodbye.
