These lands that I have once known
Are not the same anymore.
These lands have no longer been overgrown
With the berries and plants
That I have loved and look for.

These lands carry opportunities for adventure
Unlike those that I or my ancestors have seen in past years.
There are new plants to enjoy and to eat,
including those golden sticks of potatoey goodness.
There are new smells.
Smells of new people and new plants.
There is one smell that I could live without.
The smell produced by those four-wheeled rolling and groaning animals.

There are brightly colored berries so plump and full-grown
Growing in those gardens filled with the promises of survival.
There are many different flowers whose aromatic smells are still unknown
But I can only look and wonder why that fence was built by my rival.
Why do they want me to live outside of this garden, all on my own?

Our new neighbours, although unkind
Often supply us all sorts of foods.
From apples to berries to every plant in between.
They are washed and free of worms and insects,
Protein that I will surely not miss.

The new structures here shade me from the yellow rays of sunshine.
Rays that give me warmness and the most delightful relief
From the pain that lingers in my joints and in my spine.
But what is really giving all of this grief
Is the selfishness of the humans for not thinking about my beliefs.

If you would only look at the bright side then you would see
That these structures can be used as dependent sources of heat.
In the backyard near the chimney heat will radiate
And warm you even on the coldest of winter mornings.
If you would only look at the bright side.
