Toeholds

"There were to be no toeholds for love"
Why would I need a toehold when there was a ladder?
I did not know, then, where that ladder led
I have scaled it and now I look down
Did I alone achieve these heights?
I wish there had been no toeholds
I wish I had never met you
I lie to myself.
It is a habit I am trying to break.
