Listen
I pull at my hair
bang my fist against the wall
I feel like screaming,
letting the monster in my lungs
slither up my throat and burst out my mouth
in a flurry of anger and frustration
but it wouldn't do any good
because nobody listens
nobody opens their ears
and lets the sound flow into their hearts
all they hear is words
but the words aren't what matter
why can't they see that?
I couldn't possibly say what's inside me
and whenever I try it comes out wrong
there are too many words in this language
that nobody talks
So when I'm speaking
don't watch my mouth
watch the color of the spirit
that flits from my throat
watch the way that it glides
or slithers
or soars
or rockets
or buzzes
or whizzes
or bounces
or shivers
or hovers
or swirls
or flounces
watch my heart
as it beats
each throb and echo of my desires
and maybe you'll learn to listen.
