"We know what we are, but not what we may be" - Shakespeare

On the day we met her
I saw happiness
painted inside the
creases of her cheeks
and I never would have
noticed how her
pain had been hidden deep
inside the walls
of her secret garden heart
until I found myself clawing at
my own masked sadness.
Now I see how her
skin is bruised
by razor sharp
words no one
should be told. Her smile
is fragile in the pictures she takes.
Her flesh
torn and timid. Years have gone by
since I have last seen her face
though I can still
see the mask that replaced her pain
stained face.

This is a great poem. So deep, so full of emotion. The idea of the mask is something I can definitely relate to. I spent a lot of my life hiding my emotions, and I am here to tell you that eventually, it gets harder and harder to keep it all. I can see that poetry is a way for you to express those emotions. Use that. Use writing to tell your story. Tell a great story, but also know that when things get tough, even if you don't think it, there are people out there who care and who will listen.

Thank you, yes its true. hiding the pain for me is easier than showing it and burdening those around me.

In a society that worships love, freedom and beauty, dance is sacred. It is a prayer for the future, a remembrance of the past, and a joyful exclamation of thanks for the present.
-Atwater-Rhoides, Ameila

This poem is beautiful but so sad. The more pain you have the harder it is to mask or hide, but if you do hide it you start to hide other emotions too, like happiness. But I'm not one to talk, it just seems so much simpler to hide it. Anyway, I love this poem :)
