A Mask
She was the girl they all thought was happy.
  She smiled everyday
And wanted everyone to be her friend.
  She got her schoolwork done
  And never missed a practice.
  She was normal.
She was the girl everyone thought was average
  Or maybe just above
  But she felt below.
  She woke up every morning,
  Put on her clothes,
  Brushed her hair,
  And applied her maskara.
She was the girl they all thought was optimistic.
  She saw people differently.
When most saw a rambunctious teenager,
She saw a splatter of pain.
  She saw the world differently.
  With hope but reality.
  With love but understanding.
  She was a daydreamer.
She was the girl they all thought was strong.
She put her hand on the back of a stranger
  And picked her battles.
But the real battles were within her.
  Her own World War.
And she didn’t let anyone know
And she didn’t want anyone to know
That in the night, she took off her mask
  And cried.
