Rainy Day
I stare out my window, at the water slathered across the glass
The sky engulfed in gray with flashes of light now and then
My mind wanders as I put down the dish rag and reflect
I remember when these days were exciting to me
My mother would permit to play outside if the rain wasn't too heavy
I would giggle and pull on my little rain boots and coat
The front door slamming as I ran out into the damp grass
Mud clinging to my shoes and splattering against my pant legs
The water was cold and icy, but refreshing in the hot summer
And the life it gave to the world was incredible to my childish mind
The frogs croaked as they leapt in small puddles of wetness
And the small animals scurried into bushes for shelter
I would raise my head to the sky and feel the droplets
And then my mother would call me in and warm my insides
With a mug of hot chocolate and a movie
I stare out the window, at the rain pouring down
I smile as I pull on my sneakers and coat
And run out into the rain like a small child, laughing and dancing
