Left Behind
Constant chatter all around me
I look and see
Familiar, close faces
That couldn’t be more distant
Words threaten to spill over
But I guard my mouth
The thoughts bounce around my head
They try to jump out
But I keep them inside
Because I know what happens
When my words leave me
It’s unbearable
Agonizing
Tormenting
I can’t hold them in any longer
I speak
They turn to glare at me in disgust
I’m burning in a circle of fiery stares
I’m suffocating from the smoke
Then, suddenly, the ice cold darkness
Chatter resumes
But I am left behind
Withering away on a barren wasteland
But at least I can breathe again
I sigh quietly
If this is what friendship means
I think I’d rather be lonely
