Favorite Quote:
"I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live by the body, I live by faith in the son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me." -Galatians 2:20

Me
I am a beaming smile, not perfectly white or straight.
Genuine or a mask to hide behind.
I wonder innocently what went wrong,
Why do we pretend to get along?

I hear insincere uttering,
And frigid silence.
I see lips tighten into a fine line.
Thirty-two white pearls vanish.
I want to be me,
So I might as well escort myself out now.

I am a beaming smile,
Not perfectly white or straight.
I pretend that my joy is everlasting,
Ignoring the cavities; scars of the past.
I feel my tongue resting behind my teeth,
Held back and tied.

I touch the memories in my mind.
They exist as reminders of what used to be.
I worry that the emptiness will always be present,
Engulfed in a wave of emotion, I sink to the darkest depths of me.
I cry out with my eyes,
Pleading for a savior.
I am a beaming smile,
Not perfectly white or straight.
I understand that life goes on,
And the sun will shine another day.
I say that love heals all wounds.
Forgiveness will set you free.

I dream that human beings will be treated as such.
Things could change.
I try to show love and compassion.
Strength will come from within.
I hope for a new beginning,
With sincerity, love and confidence.
I am a beaming smile, not perfectly white or straight.

The author's comments:

My creative writing teacher gave  me a format to write an "I Am" poem. Most of the phrases started with I____so it was up to the author to decide where the story would go. For example, the list included phrases such as "I wonder", "I see", and "I hear." Something very significant about me is that I love to smile. But my life isn't perfect. So I used "a beaming smile" to portray my story through an extended metaphor.
