A steady grid of black and red holding up a kingdom.
The glossy, plastic-coated cardboard gathered dust.
Said to be the perfect game of strategy and skill said a
voice to a child in a plastic chair, feet dangling above carpet.

Grammar school friends had slipped away for the time being,
Summertime excitement came then floated away.
Popping like the bubbles that stained the patio.
Traded in for a day at the library.

All of the others have came and gone.
One left behind to ponder the molded black pieces.
Trying to pass time by thinking and staring,
with nothing accomplished in the end.

How to win is still not understood,
the voice on the other caused panic when it said Check.
Unawake what that meant, she moved the black steed two spaces
right and three up to protect a newfound interest.
