The Pang
do you ever all of a sudden smell the past
it comes rushing back to you
the blood behind your nose, your eyes
the stinging, ringing in your head and ears
it knocks you over,
the trickling red pours out your nostrils
involuntary salt streams blinding you, scalding your cheeks
first the periphery lost
to colorful splotches
orange, green
then it closes in
the center gone in a sea of prickling gray
with the now-muffled wail of something urgent
that you can’t quite remember
