The Burden on My Back
A pack of bricks, the clock ticks
My back hunches, the gravel crunches
I march on, on, on
With this burden on my back.
For years I could not feel it,
For years it built and piled
I must have simply ignored it
Made a home with wife and child.
An old book, a weary look
The pages turn, my candle burns
I read on, on, on
With this burden on my back.
Now I finally feel it
Now the weight is revealed
Now I know I must clear it
For my conscience will not yield.
A journey ahead, a soul misled
Family’s hearts break, this risk I take
I run on, on, on
I will not return home
With this burden on my back.
