"The purpose of literature is to turn blood into ink." -T.S. Elliot

I once fell in love with a girl.
And when I looked at her,
The sun shined from behind her eyes
And poppies grew between each strand of hair
And her freckles lit up like stars.
She sucked all the beauty in the world
From around her soft feet
And soaked it up into her bones
Like a flower after rain.
But then sometimes
She just pissed me off.
Sometimes I couldn’t stand to hear her
B**** about one more thing.
Sometimes the way her breath
Groped at me from the other side of the bed
Twisted at my last shred of sanity.
And when she called me lazy
And sad and over emotional
And cowardly and c***y,
I wanted to throw back at her
All the things I ever thought she was
And watch them burst
Between her poppies and her stars.
But before I ever mustered the courage
(remember, I’m cowardly)
She told me to go
Far, far away
So that she could kiss someone else.
Scream at someone else.
F*** someone else.
Insult someone else.

It has been 3 years, 7 months, and 19 days
Since I fell in love with a girl.
And I have yet,
To fall in love with another one.

This poem is about my first relationship and how, at least for the time being, it was the most beautiful, disfunctional, messed up, amazing thing that has ever happened to me.
