White Elephant
It happens all around me.
Discrimination is unavoidable.
They get in trouble,
They get sentenced.
One night, ten years,
For life, or for death.
May the crime be trifling,
Or may it be immense.
There may be no crime at all.
Regardless, they are sentenced,
And all I can do is sit here,
Watch, and feel guilty.
I’ve grown up white,
Privileged and pampered.
When I am with black people
I am the big, white elephant in the room.
That will never be treated the same as them.
I feel guilty,
I am the chicken in a flock of turkey,
During November.
I don’t have the street smarts they do,
But even if I did,
I wouldn’t need to use them.
So here I stand,
Waiting, watching.
To see if the world,
Will ever be equal.
