The Rabbit and The Boy
"stay up for a minute longer, i want to talk"
said the boy.
the small rabbit that hid behind
his ears gently peeked out and
smiled, "of course."
the boy talked of past lives,
of lives lived in gallant fashion and loves loved
upon arching bridges above sparkling red and blue
rushing rivers.
the rabbit listened with tired ears,
his fur was matted with fatigue
and his eyes glossed over with
the stress of inexperience.
"i have looked near and far for one who would love
me with such vigor," the boy cried, a dainty hand
flung over his face in dramatics.
the rabbit's eyes opened, looking up
through blonde eyelashes that batted
like a metronome along to his heartbeat.
"perhaps that one might be me,"
he thought to himself.
the boy spoke in soft clouds in the mist of twilight,
lulling the rabbit into the trap of his beauty.
with every word, his lips curled like flower petals
that risked tearing with each movement.
the rabbit quite liked flowers.
so as the twilight faded into dawn,
the small, soft rabbit dug his paw
into the space between his fragile ribs
and dug out a beating heart to offer.
the boy smiled his rose petal smile and said:
"you're beautiful, you're clever, you're smart and kind.
but who ever heard of a boy like me loving a pet like you?"
and so the rabbit limped away,
his heart dragging like a weight behind him,
leaving a trail of red ink for the boy
just in case he might need a friend
for late night reminiscing
again, soon.
