Why Enkidu?
Why do you leave me now when I need you the most?
“Is that the way it is with friends?” (50)
I can “see neither what was ahead...nor behind” (59) without you.
You were a ray of sunshine in my cloud of darkness,
But that ray had disappeared and left me back in the dark.
You were an innocent person before being
Swept into the claws of fate.
Is it fair for my friend, “who once had run among the animals” (48),
To be taken from this world?
“I have longed for some companionship” (20), but Enkidu has
Given me much more: a brother.
Why Enkidu?
“We killed Humbaba and the Bull of Heaven” (46), but it
Is I who encouraged us.
He didn’t know how to hurt, only to love and care.
Enkidu was like a lion, brave and loyal.
He had always looked out for me;
Is it fair for a guardian angel to be punished?
The list is endless of what Enkidu has given me
An I repayed him with death.
He was my guide, my friend, and my brother.
I am lost without him,
The sun doesn’t shine and the birds don’t chirp
Why Enkidu?
