Canoe Trip
With rhythm we paddle as the light disappears,
the water around us is a large dark mirror.
We glance at the map before continuing our trek,
searching for a site before the sun has set.
We climb ashore, arms feel like tires,
but there is much to do before we retire.
Unpack, set the tent, and stack firewood with care,
the blue flames are my blanket in the chilly night air.
At last, we collapse on the ground to rest,
not only exhausted but content and refreshed.
Exhilarating, relaxing, simple but rare,
with the beauty of the wilderness, few things compare.
