My Moment of Realization
Uncharacteristically hesitant,
The headmaster unfolded his paper,
Took a deep breath and began:
“This morning—
As I’m sure you’ve heard
A dear friend passed away.”
The world fell off its axis
As I shut my eyes
In fear of nausea.
A heavy finality stuck
In my throat, grew,
Then fell to my stomach.
When my eyes opened,
The cruel sun rose and
Smothered the chapel pews.

My friend M passed away suddenly this year. I wrote a series of poems recording my emotions in memory of my dear friend. This is poem number two.
