I want to stand as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge you see all the kinds of things you can't see from the center.
-- Kurt Vonnegut

I would have been out,
terrorizing the city,
if there was no rain.

if skies were blue and
cloudless, I would demolish
buildings everywhere.

instead I am in
dry hotel; not all reptiles
adore the water.

so here I am in
the lobby and oddly no
person has asked me,

“why are you here?” or
“can I help you, sir?” no one
has even been scared.

maybe my kind gives
me a bad name, but I can’t
help it if I’m shy.

I have to prove my
dominance – I am dragon,
hear me roar! Sorry…

let me try pacing
at the elevator’s base,
to wait for my prey

the doors open wide
and to my surprise, she’s there;
beautifully there.

my tail curls out of
modesty, but I return
to ordinary

when I know what is
expected of a dragon:
fierce, fiery mad.

I do what I must –
clenching at porcelain, my teeth
shudder at the cracks.

lemon mists in to
my snout; I sense an omen,
from such a tart fruit

angelic lips part,
long black hair blows behind her,
then flame everywhere.

charred, I fall; out of
shame and pain, but mostly shame.
my bones on the rug:

scorched; I guess we are –
me and Molly – one in the
same. only if you

look from the outside
in or from the inside out.
like lemons or rain.

In a series of 17 haikus put together, this is a poem that I wrote in a response to another poem I studied for class.
