"I want to taste and glory in each day, and never be afraid to experience pain; and never shut myself up in a numb core of nonfeeling, or stop questioning and criticizing life and take the easy way out. To learn and think: to think and live; to live and learn: this always, with new insight, new understanding, and new love." -Sylvia Plath

The tick of the clock rang clear in my head,

as I started to ponder scenes that passed.

Memories of hate and tears that were shed,

that have yet been able to be grasped.

They began to slip and fall through my fingers,

like rain drops falling from the darkened skies.

Trying to catch the lost dream that lingers,

I began to fall into the clouded fog of lies.

Come back to me, the memories cry out,

clawing their slow way back into my heart.

They start to quickly plant their seeds of doubt,

in hopes of growing and to never depart.

Just then a faint light appeared up ahead,

a small glimmer of hope in the sadness.

As I turned from despair the demons fled,

to the light I ran, leaving the darkness.

I had once found my worth in the bleak past

but the promise of the future surpassed.

I really liked how well the last four lines tied everything together. Powerful word choice.

The author is able to make the reader experience the subject’s progression from pain and darkness to hope and light, in a way that has you cheering for the subject. This evolution becomes visible and climactic in the line “to the light I ran, leaving the darkness.”

I like the first and last lines best. The first has a tick-tock rhythm, while the last has significant meaning. Also, the poem has good visualization of interior struggles.
