Johnny the Green
A young boy barely a man
Proud to fight for king and country,
The thirst for glory couraged stand-
He enlisted that day, moon high by the sun tree.
The smell of salty shores and sour seamen
Filled the green’s lungs as he idled the docks
‘Till a voice bellowed out, “To the lowlands,
Get movin’ boy!” the commodore with his rum on rocks
Yet when the boy arrived
Hell came down, shells battered beachheads
And machine guns ribbons Johnny’s as they died
And now it seemed the boy misread
As he laid among the dying and the dead
