Romy and Michele's High School Reunion"Romy and Michele's High School Reunion" was released in 1997 and is now on video. It features Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow as two friends, Romy White and Michele Weinberger. The shallow, off-beat pair are roommates in Los Angeles who have accomplished little during the last ten years. The story focuses on Sagebrush High's tenth-year reunion and Romy and Michele's attempts to receive respect from their former classmates. When I first approached "Romy and Michele's High School Reunion," I expected extremely annoying characters, jokes that fell flat, and a storyline that was lacking in reality. This assumption was chiefly due to television advertisements that concentrated solely on Romy and Michele's lack of intelligence. It appeared to be a Jim Carrey-type movie, of which I am not a fan. Yet, as I watched the movie, I found this to be a false prediction. Each unusual character is interesting. Romy, Michele, and Heather Mooney (Janeane Garofalo) are most entertaining due to their unique personalities. The two main characters' positive attitudes bring energy to the film while Heather's blunt and abrupt manner toward others adds to the humor created by Sorvino and Kudrow. The simplicity of the dialogue is well written by Robin Schiff, using the ignorance of the characters to his advantage. The plot never strays from reality, with the exception of an unexpected dream sequence. While there were four or five surprises, the ending was predictable. Every comedy ends happily and problems are almost always resolved, or at least confronted. Since male actors are dominant in the comedic field, I believe people may be drawn to "Romy and Michele's High School Reunion" because it is centers around two women. Overall, the film is fun and original. I would not recommend it for younger viewers due to strong language
