One Day After School
“Anne it’s time to get up for school, you’re already late bringing the little ones to school,” said Mrs. Caddy. Mrs. Caddy is our caretaker here at the orphanage, she is like a mother to all of us kids and does everything to protect us. “Be right down,” I said as I try to wiggle my way into my jeans trying to get dressed in a hurry. This a normal thing for me, to get up at the last second and have no time to get ready. As I walk down the stairs I see all of the little kids looking at me with this look on there face that says ‘if we’re late it’s all your fault’. I grab the piece of toast that Mrs. Caddy made for me and walked out the door with all of the little kids. Since we live in an orphanage we have to walk to the school because one we don’t have a big enough car to get us all there and two there is no bus that comes here to pick us up.
The walk to school isn’t that bad seeing as though I get to spend time with the little kids and I usually never do because they are always either running around the house like crazy kids or they are sleeping. There aren't a lot of older kids that live here. There are four, there is Sam, Alex, Dave, and me. Alex and I have been here ever since we can remember and we find this place home. Sam showed up here when he was five and says that this place is like heaven compared to the house he used to be in. Dave is different, he has been a foster child ever since he was born but he hasn’t always been at this place, he has moved from orphanage to orphanage trying to find the one that he fit the best in, and I guess he chose this one because he has been here for a little over three years now and hasn’t complained.
Walking to school with four high school kids, five middle school kids, and eight elementary kids gets a little hectic. The walk itself isn’t that long but the pace that the little kids walk is painfully slow. The first stop is the elementary school, the principal talked to Mrs. Caddy and they have a teacher wait at the end of the street for the kids so they don’t have to have us walk them all the way to the building. After we drop them off with their teacher we make our way to the middle school. The middle school is right next to the high school so us high school kids say goodbye to the middle school kids and keep walking to our school.
As we walk into the school we all go our separate ways to our friends. Sam and Alex are the “popular” people at school while Dave and I are what we like to call the wallflowers of the school, we aren’t the popular people but we aren’t the people that everyone makes fun of, we are just kind of there minding our own business. The bell rings shortly after we show up and we start to head to class. When it was time for lunch I sat with the few friends that I have at this school. Last year I had a bunch of friends but then one of them got into a fight with me and she took all of her friends with her and left me with no one. It’s okay though because they weren't real friends and now I have real friends that will always be there.
When the final bell rang I waited outside of the school for Sam, Alex, and Dave. I was waiting in our normal spot for a long time and then suddenly Dave came out of no where and said that Sam and Alex weren’t coming home with us today. We decided to give the middle school kids a little bit of responsibility and have them pick up the little kids from elementary school. We would obviously call on them every ten minutes and make sure that everything was alright but we wanted to teach them responsibility. When I was about to call for the second time I got a call from one of them, they said “Anne, three of the little kids have been taken by some big scary guys. They said that they were going to come back for us next. We’re all scared and we don’t know what to do please come help us.”
We decided to run the rest of the way home in hopes to find them waiting helplessly on the side of the street, but they were no where to be seen. We screamed for them and even asked some people that were in some of the stores if they had seen a group of kids walk by but none of them said that they saw them. We continued to run back to the foster house and tell Mrs. Caddy so that she could possibly help us find them. When we got back and told Mrs. Caddy what happened she said, “there are a group of people that have wanted the foster house shut down for years and they said that they would do anything to make that happen, and I guess kidnapping the kids was there plan.”
The first thing that we did was call Alex and Sam to see where they were and ask if they were okay. They didn’t answer the phone so now we think they have them too. We finally figured out that we can’t do this on our own so we decided to go to the police station and tell them that there are fifteen foster children that have just been kidnapped. Of course they said that they would help but it would take twenty four hours for the search to start because they have more important things to worry about. After waiting in the police station for what felt like hours we made up our minds and said that we are going to look for them ourselves without the help from the police.
We didn’t even know where to start, until Mrs. Caddy realized that the people that wanted the foster house closed owned a fabric shop a couple blocks away from the house so that is the first place we decided to look. When we showed up all of the people that worked there had this look like they knew something was going on but they knew not to say anything. We knew that the kids were there, we all had this feeling like they were in the same building as us. The more we casually looked around the store we found something that told us that they were definitely there, one of the little girls has a little charm bracelet and one of the charms must have fallen off during the process of getting them in here and it was stuck in a piece of fabric on the corner of the store over by the door that leads to the basement of the store.
Having all three of us go down there would be too obvious so we waited till no one was looking and I went down there by myself not knowing what was down there. To my surprise they were all down there, all fifteen of them. They were all either tied to the poled holding the ceiling up or they were tied to chairs, there feet tied together and there mouths taped shut. As I look around the little cramped room I realize that they all have bruises and cuts from trying to escape and failing. I untie them one at a time and send them through the door to the upstairs to escape. When I got to the last person, who just happened to be Alex we heard someone walking down the stairs. We decided that the only way to get out was to fight the guy so thats what we did, we fought him. It didn’t take much for him to fall to the ground because Alex is really strong and is used to fighting people.
When we made our way to the top of the stairs everyone ran back to the house and we stayed there nice and safe. We told the police exactly what happened and they took all of those people to jail. Now we all have a very interesting story to tell about the one day after school.
