Dark
It was a weird dream. I guess that all dreams are weird, but this one was definitely weirder than any other I’d had. I couldn’t see, and try as I might, I couldn’t open my eyes. Or, maybe they were open but it was so dark that it didn’t make a difference. I tried to see if my body could move, but I felt stuck, as if my feet were glued to the ground. I called out for help, my voice tired and weak. I finally gave in to the blackness.
By the next morning, all that I could remember of the previous night was darkness. Which is pretty normal, seeing as it usually does get dark at night.
I slowly got up and went through my usual morning routine. I took my shower, brushed my teeth, brushed and dried my hair then pulled it into a bun to keep it out of my face. I looked in my closet for something to wear, pulling out my uniform-like black pants and a nice blouse. In the kitchen, I grab a muffin and pour myself a thermos of coffee before going out to my little car and embarking on my hour long commute to work.
After a few hours of sitting in front of the computer, I lean back in my chair and rest my eyes for just a second. Instead of the usual orangey-pink light that I see through my eyelids, I see pitch black. Startled, I get up to go to the cafeteria for lunch. By the time I get out of the elevator on the ground floor, all is forgotten.
My little car chugs through the mercifully light traffic. I check in my rearview mirror as I merge into the next lane and see a black car a ways back quickly weaving between the other cars. I think nothing of it as I turn the radio to my favorite station.
A few minutes later, I hear a screeching of breaks behind me as one of the cars behind me is cut off by the black car. It comes speeding up the lane, daring any car to get in its way. Sadly, that car is mine.
The crunching seems to be coming from all directions, and I realize that the black car is pushing my car into the one on my left. It continues for a minute, but then all is quiet and I can feel the pain, blackness threatening to take hold of me from the edge of my vision.
I can barely see, but something tells me that I have to get out of my car. Try as I might, I can’t move more than an inch one way or another. I give in just as my dream from the night before comes back to me full force. The black. Of the other car. In my vision. That is threatening to take hold of me. My inability to move. I know what will happen when I try, but I still do. “Help.” It is weak, barely above a whisper, and I know that no one would be able to hear me. As I feel myself fading away, I hear sirens faintly in the back of mind.
