Jonathon

Friday morning, just a casual weekday morning for 18-year-old Jonathan: wake up, get dressed, hop on the bus…this is his routine. Although for Jonathon, it doesn’t happen all that easy being that he is intellectually disabled; things are much more difficult for him. However little does Johnathan know that today is going to be one of the best days he has had yet this school year.
It was a very eventful Friday for West Ridge High: pep rally during seventh period, the big rivalry football game after school, and the homecoming dance at night. As the bell rang to start the school day students made their way to class. The buildings were packed and loud conversation echoed throughout the halls. One student in particular however had a differed agenda for the day. Jennifer, a very involved student in her high school, president of her senior class and the captain of the varsity cheer team, was going to ask Jonathon to homecoming. She has many friends in her school, Jonathan being one of them. She has known Jonathon every since elementary school and as the years went on their bond grew stronger. Jennifer is very involved in the ESE program at West Ridge High; she goes in their class daily and spends time with kids. She loves them and vice versa, they are all the closest of friends and today Jennifer is going to change Jonathans life.
After a few hours had gone by at school it was already lunchtime. It was now the perfect time to begin the first part of Jennifer’s plan, she was going to stop by and give Jonathon a pep rally ticket.. As she walked her way into building 15, the E.S.E building, Jonathan just so happened to see her from the tiny classroom door window and came running out yelling “Jennyyyy!”
“Hey Jonathan! How is your day going?” Jennifer responded back with a warm smile plastered to her face.
“Good” Jonathan said shortly.
“I have a surprise for you Jonathon okay? So close your eyes!” she responded as Jonathan closed his eyes slowly looking confused as ever.
“Alright open!” she said in an eager voice.
“Oh wow! Thank you thank you! Does this mean we can sit together at the pep rally? Do you think the band will be there?” Jonathan asked with excitement.
“Yes and yes, but I have to go back to class now Jonathon, I will see you at the pep rally, don’t forget!” She replied as she gave him a big bear hug and walked out the building.
“Bye Jenny!” yelled back Jonathan.
A few more hours passed and the pep rally was only a few minutes away. Jennifer was so happy and content with her decision for her senior year homecoming. The seventh period bell rang and the school began piling in the gym. You could hear the drum line from any point on campus and every student was getting really hyped. Freshman, sophomores, juniors, seniors, faculty, it is a full house. It was now time for Jennifer to execute what she had been so eagerly waiting to do the whole day. She handed some signs to a few of her friends in the crowd whom she already instructed on what to do with them. Jennifer waited outside for Jonathan. He arrived just as the band was making its way into the gym and I all she could see was his face light up as they played, it was priceless! However, little did Jonathon know she had much more in store for him.
“Hey bud, are you excited?” Jennifer asked anxiously.
“Oh yeah I am!” Jonathan shouted back at her.
They walked in the gymnasium together, Jonathon’s hand gripping hers tightly as he danced along to the beat of the drums. As the pep rally began: the cheerleaders performed, the football players came out, and the coaches gave their speeches. After the team captain of the football team gave his big “hoohraw” Jennifer grabbed Jonathon and made her way down to the gym floor as the captain handed the mic over to her.
“Hello guys! How is everyone doing?” Jennifer yelled, trying to pump up the crowd.
As the crowd yelled in excitement, anticipating what was about to go down, Jennifer queued to her friends holding the signs and said, “I have someone very special with me here today and I have an even more special surprise for him” The crowd all looked over at Jonathan, his face bright red yet full of excitement, he smiled and waved up at everyone completely oblivious as to what was really going on.
Jennifer turned Jonathan around so he wasn’t facing the signs and simultaneously gave the “thumbs up” for her friends to hold them up as high as possible.
“Hey Jonathan, I have a question for you,” she says to him in the mic.
“Yes?” Johnathan responded shyly.
Jennifer turned Jonathan around slowly to eleven individual signs that read “H-O-M-E-C-O-M-I-N-G?”
“Will you go to homecoming with me?” she asked with relief and pure joy.
“Yes!” he shouts back at her as he started to jump up and down giving her a huge hug and fist pumping to the crowd. He was ecstatic!
Everyone was on his or her feet; happiness filled the entire gymnasium, happiness filled Jonathon’s heart.
