Fear engulfs me

But I try to let a word

Flutter off my tongue

Like a hummingbird

Still, voices in my head

Keep drowning it out

So this diminutive bird

Has its doubt

It wants to soar

But its wings are broken

It wants to chirp

But it’s never spoken

My voices

Advise the hummingbird

To fly away

But, it will never

Reach the sky

Anyway

Who says

You incompetent fly

With a beaten wing

When fear wraps

Around you

Like a nest round a bird

Who says

Your chirp

Will not get heard

The author's comments:

This poem conveys my feelings when I tried out for the school musical as a shy teenager.  I had to find courage from within to overcome something that was completely out of my comfort zone.  I visualized a hummingbird speaking to me as I walked up onto the stage.  As I fell into a sub conscious state of comfort I was suddenly free of my fears.
