Someone has lifted
The lid on the world.

Steam surges upward,
Surrendering us,
Once chained and bowed
Beneath humid haze.

It chases the void,
Swallowed by merciful blue.

Trees stretch their limbs,
Buildings straighten up,
Earth sprawls at ease,
Sweltering bonds cut away.

All things look round
In quivering anticipation.

The author's comments:

I live in Mississippi, where the summers are absolutely sweltering. The first really cool day of the year feels like everything has suddenly come alive, free from the oppression of the heat.
