The lines under your eyes are maps
Blue and vivid and taking you somewhere
They were supposed to take you somewhere
They were supposed to take me somewhere
But they never did
Just hung like a welcome sign on a bridge
That never really meant welcome at all
The plane was supposed to take us
To where the buildings never come down from the sky
And the suitcases ride on a carousel
Just waiting to be picked up
And the sky would be bright
Or dark, the way you wanted it
I could see the sun
And have the courage to tell you that I'm not like you
I want the sun
And you standing in front of a brick wall
The living room wall
Our living room wall
Where the hallway calls “Is anyone there?”
If our footsteps don't reassure the floor that we are
And if our laughter doesn't bounce off the ceiling, fly up the fireplace
To be heard by every jealous ear
The high lonely feeling hovers in the air
Telling us that it was never really ours
The hope that hung in my chest, your chest, his chest
Don't take that away
Because we haven't even gone to the edge of the Eiffel Tower yet
The top of the Chrysler building
Stood in all the places you wanted to stand, with me by your side
Maybe not wanted but solidly present
And without your hair between my fingers
Breathing proves quite difficult
Hearts don't want to beat
They want to stop pumping the blood to my head
The blood that says you're not here
And I'm here, alone
With the knowledge of your absence
And nothing else to stop the sugar clogging my veins
The acid from killing my skin
You don't have to try
We don't have to be attached by bone
By fingertips without the aid of alcohol
By hands of your own free will
Because I'll get over it
Right?
I'll get over myself, over this
And we'll have the whole world to ourselves
And non-constricted lungs
And hearts that are happy to beat the blood to our heads
That says we're together
If you'll just let us
