“The Law of Consolation”
The tears caught me off guard…
for she normally hid the hurt so well…
Cleverly disguised her sorrow…
so whenever she was suffering, no one could tell…
But looking through the lens I fell…
Down into the depths of her soul…
Let her be, the judges told me, her pain is her own to bear-
Providing meaningless verdicts lacking a loophole
And I immediately knew that it all was unfair
Composed by a hypocritical jury-
With a tendency to enslave the innocent; drown the sweet with fury
But even Bitter jurisdiction shall not threaten the quest…
As I delved more into the lies…
Erased the daunting thoughts of “justice”
And uncovered her disguise…
Bruises, scars, and overwhelming pain
Marked only the beginning of her demise…
I learned the secrets… Knew the truth-
Buried deep within her eyes…
Uncovered a Flawless ignorance
Etched into the dimples of her smile…
The torment in her laughter…
Evidence that this torture has continued all the while…
Love stole her heart…
Then framed her- left her fragile with no defense
And so she fell apart…
Surrendered her sanity while chaos consumed her sense…
The day the music died-
She was a witness, a victim…
But the world didn’t end… Only passed her by…
Left her sitting all alone… contaminated by neglect in the interim
Her heart cracked, and the pieces turned to dust…
Glided menacingly to the floor…
And all that remained of her hope
Shall echo in her soul no more…
The daunting midnight didn’t release it’s hold…
And broke down a girl, once so clever…
Once so bold.
Frightened to feel any emotion…
I quietly sat beside her…
Feigning the allusion of calm… and giving a genuine devotion
But the pretense collapsed and I broke down too-
For the weight of her world was crushing…
So I looked at my Friend with saline in my words and I spoke what I came here to say…
I told her, that I too- had experienced the very same piercing pain…
When all is said and done. And gone. And over.
And you don’t have the strength to carry on…
I will continue to hope for you…
Make a wish on every star-
And let the magic build up- until the universe
Can no longer let you lie
In the oblivion of other’s eyes…
And in this new awakening-
The accusations which bind you
shall finally die…
