a matter of time.
and it bites, it stings like a cobra's saliva
bites deep into your flailing arm as you flee
from the shadowed scene of high school memories
it grabs ahold and spreads its venom deep into your veins,
until all that's left is a decaying frame of anguish and loneliness
because she's leaving you, and you know it,
and you don't want it to happen but she says
there's no other way and all your screams in desperation do nothing
to change her mind, she won't even look at you
she says 'this is the way it's got to be, i'm getting out of here'
and you say 'no don't leave me, please' and she says something muffled
as she slips out through the door...
and then the next year you'll be found,
stumbling blindly around the stage, lost and confused and
missing her desperately and you don't know why she had to
leave, but she did
in one whole year, you've seen her twice
once at the grocery store, once at the local park on the fourth of july
for the fireworks display
civilities exchanged, but nothing more, none
of the love and the sisterhood and the friendship that you had grown
so accustomed to the year before
and you feel it's finally over, really and finally over,
when you don't even respond to the call of her name anymore,
just to wonder who's calling your best friend,
because it's almost the same as if your own name was called
because she's not your best friend anymore
she's just a girl you knew once
and nothing more
