I dropped your hand and we both cried;
I turned my back, choking inside.
Step by step, I tore my heart;
Tear after tear, I fell apart.
You needed me, you screamed,
I told myself it was just a dream.
And as I watched you break and fall,
I remained as cold as a concrete wall.
The guilt grows inside of me,
Kicking and screaming to be let free.
I hold it all in and counter a smile,
I keep my grace and pretend in style.
But all along, I’m crumbling within…
Selfishness – a bittersweet sin.
