Loving Persephone
She was golden,
Summer light that had somehow filtered
Through earth and stone and smoke
To warm ice –
I had to discover.
Breaking from underneath,
The ground moaning
From the division
Trembles that must have alerted her
She turned her face to me
Huge green eyes
Parted lips
Lovely
I reached out
To touch?
To test
The reality of such beauty
And before I knew it
I had her
And we were swallowed by darkness.
Before I could speak a word
I smelled the salt of her sadness
But all I knew
Was that I didn’t want winter
Anymore.
