the shadow garden
My sister dug her plump
Fists into the earth. She
Groped the dirt with a
blissful squint.
Out of the millions of flowers
that bloomed in his garden, two
remain-- a spiky orange dahlia,
One smug white rose
And a brown carrot.
We played a game of darts
He pricked himself.
It seemed odd that the blood could
Still be so red and bright under
That saggy white wrist
