Holding You Quietly
holding onto something that you so want to let go is like standing on the double yellow line on a busy road and wondering how much longer you’ve got to live
and keeping that something safe is like walking on a tightrope and
hoping that your toes don’t miss and meeting that guy, finally
who calls himself honest and letting him kiss you is
giving away something to a boy who doesn’t
give a damn about you or any of the other
girls he’s been kissing and crying later
is pouring salt on the wound and
remembering the way he used
to call you his and wishing
you’d saved that
something for a
boy who meant
it is crying
over spilt
milk
and
your tears
will make me quiet as
I hold you and wish I knew what
to say to make you good again and when you
fall asleep I’ll tell you that it’ll be okay and I will
mean it since you won’t be able to hear me, anyway and
*
you
understand, don’t
you?
