An Unexpected Path

My feet slightly shuffled as I walked to the door
Because I knew exactly what I was going in for.
The man on the inside was familiar to me,
My band director, who would eventually teach me glee.
As I tried my first choice I quaked with fear
As this the coming few trials would impact my band career.

The first three of my selections created sounds timid and queer,
But the last of my attempts produced a tone bright and clear.
Then I left anew, a trumpeter too
And went to meet those friends who would help me see the coming years through.
I gained a great deal of courage that day
Inside of me, a champion trumpeter was on his way.
Now I reminisce, laughingly too
That of my top four choices I wouldn’t be one, three, or two.
Yet the transpirings of that fateful day
Make all the other choices seem less than okay.
So my path had been chosen,
And my destiny frozen,
Because the path seems almost divine,
I carry through in my quest to shine.

I wrote this poem in recollection of the unexpected choice to play trumpet in band which impacted the qualities that I have today.
