Ode to My Character
When I open this notebook
And begin to writing from your point of view,
I feel like I have peeled out of my own skin
And stepped into yours.
I left myself on a hook back in reality
Like a coat
I see the world through your eyes
I hear what you hear
Smell the things you smell
And I feel everything you touch,
And every emotion you have.
Sometimes when I look in the mirror I am surprised to see my face.
Not yours.
But I do wonder…
Are you a reflection of me?
We are far from being the same person.
I nursed you until you learned how to breathe.
I began telling your story
But now you tell it to me.
I just pin it down.
Is it a distorted version of my own life I am referencing?
You’re my best friend
But we’ve never met.
You’re made of ink, paper and words.
I, your parent, consist of flesh and blood.
Oh my dear, how I love writing from your point of view!
And I will be sad when our partnership ends.
Fear not, like a flower you are pressed in between these pages.
You are safe for all eternity.
You are immortal.
I am not.
I must go on and taste life.
Create more imaginary people like you.
I will grow old while you live on for both of us.
