Blue Glass Marbles
My grandmother has a blue glass bowl
filled with blue glass marbles.
They were coins
in the markets of Childhood.
My sister and I kept shop -
the smaller ones would eat their change……
We stayed,
‘til the day we sold out
Our shares in childish games.
And the shop passed down to younger cousins.
* * * * * *
Two small girls play shop
On the square
Of carpet at Granma’s place.
The others, are gone.
Far away,
to new lands, where things cost more
than a grimy fistful of blue marbles.
