We Talked About Tomorrow
We talked about many things
When we were all alone
For tomorrow we would grow up
and leave this place called home
and we would spread our wings
and forsake these broken things
and lose it all
and learn to fall
oh so gracefully
We talked about tomorrow
and how scary it seemed
how it was suddenly larger, wilder
than we had ever dreamed
it held such promise in its pale blush of dawn
such a desperate, wilting promise
that we had pinned our hopes upon
We talked about tomorrow
and how we wished it wouldn’t come
our hands were warm, our spirits high,
our hearts a special kind of numb
so we held each other tight
and promised we’d never let go
ignoring the fading of the night
and the growing of our woe
But as the night wore on
and yesterday faded away
the stars began to shimmer
and sing the approach of day
but yet we did not want to face it,
the fulfillment of all our dreams
so we talked about tomorrow
and many other things
But as we sat together
drinking whiskey to drown our sorrow
as we sat beneath those stars
it suddenly became tomorrow
