"I like books that aren't just lovely but that have memories in themselves. Just like playing a song, picking up a book again that has memories can take you back to another place or another time.” - Emma Watson

That elusive thing
that runs so quickly I never catch up -
it will catch me soon.

As sand slips
through glass
the clocks push
away the seconds.
So time steals itself away.

Those seconds
that turn to minutes
minutes to hours
and hours to numbered days.

But drips like honey
scraped and spooned
as impatience grows.

Time smiles so sweetly under watching eyes,
but like a mischievous child
a trick is in the works
as a back is turned.

The uncontrollable.
Uncertain unease
of what time will bring.
But time regards us all the same.

That one who never watched closely
sees that you're older.
He asks, "where did time go?"

Between then, now,
here, and there.
Between yesterday and today and tomorrow
that is where time rests.

Where you're secrets are hidden
and your dreams discarded
kept safe for you
just in case.

Time is like a tireless sculptor,
tweaking at us always
until our pasts don't recognize us.

Yes, time makes us new
but not so shiny.
And time makes us
miss us.

Time will heal the broken
and wash away tears
scrub out biting memories
until there is nothing left to fear.
But they will feel only loathing
when they realize what took
as it gave.

One that lives only this moment
knows this moment is everything.

The author's comments:
For this piece, I was inspired by Wallace Stevens' poem titled Thirteen Ways to Look at a Blackbird. In my creative writing class, our assignment was to describe something in thirteen different ways. In place of the blackbird, I chose to look at time.
