The Pretenders
Why do we pretend?
We pretend to not be sad
To be happy
So as not to
Burden others.
We pretend to be something we're not;
To like something we hate
Just to fit in.
To hate something we love,
So we aren't left out.
We pretend, so as not to show the world
Who we truly are
Because we have a fear
Of being rejected.
But to what cost?
To the fact that nobody will
Ever know
Who we truly are?
Tell me.
Why do we pretend?
