Make friends, not horcruxes

The world is pale,

as the little girl grabs at the mist.

Her feet sinking into the foamy waves.

Her fingers are tangled in her youth.

little girl

'How come the sky is blue?'

She asks her brother,

'Because it is reflecting the sea.'

he tells her.

little girl

She builds sand castles

just away from the waters reach,

working hard on each peak.

In the end she cries because her hard work is swallowed

by the rough waves

and pounding feet.

little girl

The wind picks up her hair,

and sends her giggling

into a fit.

Laying, laughing by the seaweed.

little girl

When the light shuts the door,

and only the dark seeps in.

The little girl sits by the fire.

Her parents have to told her not

to touch the flame.

'It will hurt'

they say.

little girl

She looks up at the stars

in their spotted constellations

and wonders what pain is.

little girl

When her night is done

the waves rush in and out.

her thoughts floating.

little girl

Her tears are of salt water,

joining the sea as the same substance.

She decides that when you are in pain you cry.

little girl

'the ocean is pain'

the wind whispers in her ear,

and suddenly she is not so

little

anymore.

'Why are you crying?'

Her parents are asking.

'Because the ocean is pain.'

She whispers,

with the depth of the night

hidden in her eyes.

They laugh at her,

'little girl'

they say

'little girl and the sea'

'We are just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year. Running over the same old ground, what have we found? The same old fear; wish you were here' - Pink Floyd

"

this is a lovely poem. i especially like the repetition of 'little girl' which creates an almost hauntingly patronising atmosphere sort of encasing the stanzas.
