An "Accident"
I hit her.
My mind slipped,
So I hit her.
I saw red,
So I hit her.
She hurt me,
So I hit her.
The tear that fell
When my hand left her face
Froze me.
The flinch that came
When I wiped it away
Destroyed me.
She didn’t hear me
When I struggled to apologize,
Because her lip still quivered
And the fear stayed in her eyes.
I knelt before her,
Bowing my head in shame
Until I heard footsteps
Running away.

I thought I would never hurt her. I never wanted to hurt her. But that one time, that one time, I couldn't keep my anger under control. I want to say that it was an accident, but I don't know if that's the truth.
