Watching the Weeks Go By
Little girl, four years old.
Sitting by her bedroom window.
Staring at a nest with a mother bird,
Not letting her sight of the nest.
Later that month there was no bird.
The little girl, desiring and hoping the bird would show.
Time...went by
but no bird showed.
Little girl lost hope,
starting no more at the nest that once had a mother bird.
Later that month, the little girl decided to look at the nest once more,
noticed sticks, branches and leaves
more suitable than before.
The mom bird sitting enjoying the sun.
Little girl,
noticed something strange...
Mother bird hovering over
round white eggs with blue polka dots underneath.
Sitting by her bedroom window.
Staring at a nest with a mother bird and her chicks.
Little girl, in awe of the chicks.
Protective of those chicks,
not letting them leave the mother’s side.
swooping at other birds and prey that might approach.
Chicks now fledgeling leaving the nest.
Little girl,
longing to see the birds again.
