lll. A failed resurrection
When my grandfather
was weak and thin
we gathered around his bed
to exchange i love yous
one final time
and when they carried him
to the sofa
and covered him
in quilts
because he was always cold
even though it was spring
he turned to me
and asked me
if i had learned spanish yet
i said no
and told him i loved him
in english
because even though
i knew how to say
te quiero mucho
i felt like it would be
a mockery
of something which had been lost
somewhere down the family line
